There's a sentence in this month's jobs report I haven't seen BLS write before: "Employment in all major industries changed little over the month." Not one sector moved enough to mention. September, as an economic event, did not happen. What did happen is that the past changed again. July 2026 has now been reported three separate times, with three different answers: -23,000, then +21,000, then -10,000. A first print is not a fact; it's a draft.

Revisions, Retreats, and the Rewriting of the Recent Past. Also Known As: The July Jobs Report
The July jobs report is going to get filed under "quiet month." Payrolls fell 23,000, unemployment ticked down to 4.1%, wages rose 3.2%. Nothing that moves a news cycle on a Friday in August. And that framing is wrong, because the most important thing in this report didn't happen in July. The same release that reported a 23,000-job loss deleted 103,000 jobs from May and June.
